Seattle is a vibrant city packed with recreation, creativity, and innovation. Seattle also has a lot to offer folks seeking therapy.  Seattle is also filled with good therapists, but the amount of misinformation and myths surrounding therapy can stop you in your tracks.

I’m here to help clear things up. Understanding what to expect from therapy can make a big difference in your journey toward getting the help you need. So, let’s dive into some common myths that might prevent you from seeking therapy in Seattle.

Myth #1: There Are No Therapists in Seattle

Truth: We’re lucky here in Seattle because we have a strong community of licensed therapists and mental health professionals.  Whether you're seeking support for anxiety, depression, or PTSD, there's a therapist who can help you. 

Myth #2: There Are No Therapists in Seattle That Specialize in Anxiety

Truth: Many people believe therapists are not equipped to handle specific issues. However, Seattle has many specialists across numerous fields, from trauma and addiction to family dynamics and career coaching. For instance, I specialize in anxiety and trauma, but I don’t specialize in addiction or couples counseling.  The trend is toward specialization, but you can also find a therapist to talk through issues and challenges.

Truth: While listening is an essential part of therapy, it’s not the whole picture. A good therapist actively engages with you to help navigate your challenges. Therapy is a two-way street, meant to help you grow and heal, not just a one-sided chat.

There are many styles to choose from when selecting a therapist. You may have experienced a therapist in the past who was a bit more laid-back than you wanted. This time around, you desire a therapist who is engaging.  My approach is interactive, direct, and engaging. Find the right approach for you.

Besides myths and misinformation, people seeking therapy also have questions about the process of therapy.  Here are a few FAQs:

  1. Starting a therapy session is always awkward.  What should I be doing? This is an important question.  This is what I tell my clients: “This is your therapy session.  I want you to bring to the session what you want to talk about.  If you have difficulty talking about yourself or you don’t know what to talk about, let me know.  I’m here to help.”

  2. How long does therapy usually last? The length of therapy varies depending on your needs and goals. Some may find relief in a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term engagement.

  3. What if I don’t feel a connection with my therapist? It's essential to feel comfortable with your therapist. If you don’t, it’s perfectly acceptable to seek another therapist who better fits your needs.  Try talking to your therapist first.  We are trained to have these sorts of discussions.  If your therapist brushes you off, it’s time to find a new therapist. 

  4. Can therapy really help me? There is a ton of research to back up the effectiveness of therapy.  I have seen many of my clients make profound changes in their lives whether they are seeking treatment for anxiety, depression, or trauma (my specialties).  One of the key ingredients to effective therapy is feeling safe and comfortable with your therapist. Keep looking until you find that just-right therapist.
